Uses of Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil has a wide range of uses and the cultivar we use has good antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant and mild sedative properties. Lavender is commonly used for tension relief, insomnia, migraines, headaches, sinusitis, asthma, halitosis, throat infections, colic, nausea, stretch marks, acne, eczema, sunburn, burns, wounds, psoriasis, insect bites and more.

For aromatherapy purposes, mix 1 part pure lavender oil with 3 parts of a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil.

Precautions: Although lavender oil is considered one of the safest essential oils, you should discontinue use if you have any allergic reactions. As Lavender promotes menstruation it’s advised to avoid during the early stages of pregnancy if there is a risk or history of miscarriage.

  • Egyptians used lavender-dipped shrouds to wrap the dead during mummification.
  • The ancient Greeks medicinally used it to treat insomnia, backaches, throat infections, chest pains and insanity.
  • The Romans used lavender oils to infuse their baths and freshen the air.
  • In the medieval and renaissance periods in Europe, Lavender flowers were scattered over floors to serve as a disinfectant and deodorant.
